NDP's Yoko Oh-no
A few days after reading a post on another blog rounding up some wacky policy suggestions made by grass-roots NDP ECA's, I thought it was something that would filter down by the time the leadership parsed the text. I was wrong.
In a move that must have been inspired by the suggestions, "Handsome" Jack Layton has come out and said that the Canadian Government should engage the Taliban, with conversation, not cluster fire. Huh?
The Taliban, the same narrowed-sighted, fundamentalists who nurtured and assisted Bin Laden in changing the world almost five years ago.
Bringing these cavemen to the table to talk does only one thing, solidify their presence in the area. Instead of driving them back to the caves in the mountains, are we prepared to say to them, "C'mon down here, you're an important part of the nation's future, let's talk.". No way.
If the NDP wishes to push this point forward even further, may I suggest that the negotiators we send is frontlined by Mr. Layton, Pat Martin and (through air-freight) Libby Davis? Perhaps looking at evil directly in the eyes may have some effects on their position.
What's that ticking noise?

I think if we were to send that trio to talk to the Taliban they would convert to Islam without a gun pointing to their head.
I think Islam or not, they subscribe to the religion of poverty. Whomever has the greatest need will be their cause to champion.
That way they gain another dependant to control.
Thanks for the comment...
I suggest you read "Ghost Wars' by Steve Coll be fore making breathtakingly simplistic assertions about the Taliban.
Is the plan simply to kill them all? If so we had better bomb Pakistan, since that's who created them and still fosters them. And negotiated with them just the other day.
Oh and getting yur NDP policy form Stephen Taylor? That's like getting CPC policy from Eugene ant La Revue Gauche.
Maybe you ought to wait until the convention and see what actually bcomes policy.
Thanks for you comment Mike...
I want to understand how you believe that the Taliban are serious talking their way to peace in the region. As someone who leans left (not that theres anything wrong with that) I would assume that you believe in the power of the common man, gathered together. That fact alone is what these terrorists stand against. Their only goal in power is to supress and regress a nation's collective thought.
The plan is to empower a nation to think and act on its own. The plan is to see everyone treated equally within one nation. Their plan is to simply "kill them all", them being our troops, NATO troops.
I brought forward the draft policy on Stephen Taylor's website for one reason only. That reason is to highlight the similar, no parallel tatics used when the wacko christian fundamentists bring forward their CPC policy suggestions and the other parties (and the CBC) do hourly spotlights on them insighting fear in a distanced leader.
As an aside, I quite enjoyed running into Mr. Layton in Ottawa (click on his name in the post), we had a great discussion about why Bill Blakie would make an excellent speaker for a couple of blocks. But if I ran into him again I would take him to task on his recent comments around our troops and why curbbing draft policy away from himself is so important.
Jack wants to talk to the Taliban, but does he want to talk to Karzai?
Karzai is visiting Canada the end of September.
Is Jack 'brave' enough to tell Karzai to his face, why helping the Afghan people is 'the wrong mission' ? Seems he is 'brave' enough to demand negotiations with Terrorists.
The REAL Jack Layton and the NDP will be exposed for all to see, at the end of September. My bet is that they all find a place to hide the day of the visit; and the Liberals will take the stage for their 'photo op' boasting that THEY sent troops to Afghanistan....LOL
Harper wins again.
